What causes asbetosis and mesothelioma?

My friend’s father has stopped working and I could tell that it was because of some illness. My friend just mentioned that it is probably asbestosis or mesothelioma. Honestly, I don’t know what this means, and he was far from willing to talk, so I am asking you, what are these illnesses and what causes them?

Only one thing causes both of those illnesses – asbestos. I suppose that your friend’s father had been spending most of his day in asbestos environment (on work I presume) and now he ended up with one of those two, very severe conditions. If this happened on work, I know that many people sued their companies for neglecting or something similar and ended up with a large amounts of money. Although, I am not so sure if that is satisfaction big enough after loosing your health.
