What causes chronic bronchitis?

Hello! My father suffers from chronic bronchitis. He used to work under very difficult condition in a factory of concrete. He retired three years ago because of his health condition. He is under corticosteroid treatment for the first time and still has no side effects although his doctor told us they are possible. I would like to know what causes chronic bronchitis.
