Hi! I’ve just heard that my best friend has heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I don’t know exactly what it is and how much is it dangerous, but I noticed that he is very worried about that. He is very young and I’m surprise that he can have such disease. What causes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a complex disease that, in most of the cases, can be caused by a variety of gene abnormalities. I read somewhere that about 50 percent of patients with HCM will have a first-degree relative who also has the diagnosis of HCM.
You should know also that young people, even small children, can suffer from it.
