What exactly happens in Graves' ophthalmopathy?

My ophthalmologist told me that it is possible for me to have Grave's ophthalmopathy. It is necessary to do some hormones analysis so we could be sure. I was not feeling sick or anything means that I had no symptoms at all. My question is What exactly happens in Graves' ophthalmopathy? Is it necessary for me to develop symptoms?

Since you are "caught" in early stage of disease I suppose that you won't develop eye symptoms. These symptoms occur because of enlarged muscle around the eye and lid retraction (going back). If you are properly diagnosed and treated your condition can stay in the way that it is now, without further progressing.
