Hello! My daughter is six years old. She had many problems with persistent infection of her tonsils. Her tonsils also became enlarged and she started snoring few months ago. Her doctor said they were obstructing her upper airways and they had to be removed. He also said tonsillectomy was considered very safe and effective surgery. We talked about the surgery but we didn't talk about the follow up care. What happens after tonsillectomy?

Hello! Don't worry; tonsillectomy is safe and effective surgery. The children usually go home the next day or the same day when they are fully recovered from anesthetic. You daughter should rest in her bed with her head elevated. She should avoid hot liquid, eat a light and soft diet and you should not worry if she loses some weight. She will also take antibiotics and narcotics. She should always stay well hydrated. Her condition will improve in ten to fourteen days. If you notice any symptoms as sudden bleeding from her mouth and nose which last more than a few minutes or fever you should contact your doctor.
