What is the primary cause for skin cancer?

What is the primary cause of skin cancer? Does it affect only fair skinned people? What cause skin cancer in dark skinned? A friend of mine does not belong to a group of fair skinned. He was diagnosed skin cancer on his back, fortunately, in early stage and is going to have it surgically removed. Is it always due to sun exposure?

Ultraviolet radiation is considered as primary cause of skin cancer. Anyone can develop skin cancer, even those with dark hair and skin, young people, healthy people. Number of cases of skin cancer increases every year and it is due to thinning of protective ozone layer. So it is actually not the sun that is responsible for development of the disease, but the exposure to radiation. Artificial sources of radiation like tanning booths and sunlamps can cause skin cancer too.
