What kind of anesthesia do you get when undergoing liver biopsy?

It looks like my father is having serious problems with alcohol. Oh, I knew he likes to drink and he kept it well from al of us, but it looks like he could not hide it from his liver. A liver biopsy has been scheduled to determine in what shape his liver really is, and it seems that he is afraid of the procedure itself. What kind of anesthesia you get when undergoing liver biopsy?

There are several ways to perform this procedure but the most common one would consist of small incision on the skin above liver are and then inserting biopsy needle in the liver for taking a sample. Local anesthetic is given for that and it all lasts for not more than 20 minutes.
