What therapy must receive those with artificial heart valves?

Please, can somebody with experience tell me What therapy must receive those with artificial heart valves? My father has just come from doctor and he told that my dad needs to go to artificial heart replacement. I hope that everything will be ok. But now I’m wondering what will be after surgery. Thanks!

Well, he will need to take certain medicaments. The artificial valves consist of metal or synthetic materials and are durable. But due to the foreign materials in the body, the blood stream is altered, which may lead to the formation of blood clots. In order to prevent this, a lifelong oral anticoagulation with coumarin derivates (Vitamin K antagonists) is required with mechanical artificial valves.
