When is heart valve replacement necessary?

Hello, folks. My husband is ill and it has something to do with his heart valve. I think it is serious and his doctor recommends replacement of his valve. I would like to know when this replacement is necessary. I would really appreciate it if someone could reply me to this. Thanks in advance.

Hi, there. It is possible that your husband has mitral stenosis or mitral regurgitation. Mitral valve separates left atrium and ventricle. In both stenosis and regurgitation, it doesn't function properly. If there are severe symptoms, then surgery is necessary. Beside surgical replacement, surgical repair can also be done.
