Who has benefits from Heart Defibrillators?

Hello, my grandfather is very ill. He had heart issues for a long time and that led to a heart attack. When we took him to the hospital doctors had to use defibrillators for reviving him. I would like to know who has benefits from heart defibrillators. I mean, is it used only for situations like my grandfather’s?

Reanimation with defibrillator is not done with all people, only for those that has heart rhythm problems (as in ventricular flatter and fibrillation). Those are conditions when heart works by itself, without any connection to pacemaker and that eventually ends with the complete heart failure. I guess defibrillation worked for your grandfather.
