Why autoimmune attacks occur, is there any research on the topic?

My sister has been diagnosed with graves disease and I have been trying to get useful info for her as much as I can. She is already undergoing therapy and it is showing immediate effect, which is a good thing for controlling her hormone levels. I discovered that it is autoimmune disease, without known cause. Why autoimmune attacks occur, is there any research on the topic?

Not only Graves disease, there is a high number of autoimmune conditions without known cause. When we say autoimmune we think of the fact that our own body's defense (immune system) is turning against us, treating our cells as foreign substances. Of course, today there are a lot of studies and constant researches that are ruing providing us with the answer on this problem. But for now, there have not been much success.
