Why does galactosemia cause hemolysis?

It looks like my sister's baby has some serious problem and she is not even one month old. She has been diagnosed with galactosemia and it seems that hard life awaits her. I also heard that there might be some further complications because of this condition. Is that true? Why does galactosemia cause hemolysis?

Well, I have to admit that I haven't heard of hemolysis as one of the possible complications, although it is quite possible. I know that there might be some serious issues with ovaries, bone density might be disturbed, and there might be some speech problems. And of course, a diet has to be applied all the time. And even if it is, those mentioned complications might still occur. Unfortunately...
