A new study finds that not all women with breast cancer fully understand their options regarding breast reconstruction.

Breast cancer patients can have breast reconstruction at the same time as their mastectomy or soon after. However, only few women decide to undergo the procedure. Many of them report they didn’t know much of the procedure or felt that the procedure was not recommended

Most women believed that breast reconstruction would make it hard to detect cancer recurrences. This was one of the main factors they didn’t want to have any further operations.

On the other hand, the women who were informed about their option didn’t want to have a breast reconstruction as they wanted to avoid more surgery.

It is still not known why there is such lack of knowledge among women regarding their breast reconstruction options but it is certain that there is a need to better inform newly diagnosed breast cancer sufferers.
