Many women prefer undergoing cesarean section to giving birth naturally for number of reasons. What these women don’t know is that they risk suffering from other complications in order to avoid the pain or cosmetic problems from natural birth.

Doctors advise that women who wish to have large families should seriously think through before undergoing multiple c-sections or having vaginal births after cesareans.

With the number of c-sections increasing, the risk of urinary and bowel injuries is also increasing, so is the need for a ventilator after delivery, blood transfusion, ICU admission, and placenta problems. These complications are directly related to the number of previous c-section a woman had.

30 132 c-section cases were analyzed in the period from 1999 to 2002. From these 30 132 women who underwent surgeries, 6 201 were having their first c-section, 15 808 second, 6 324 third, 1 452 fourth, 258 fifth, and 89 women had five or more cesarean deliveries.

Problems with placenta appeared to be the most common. Incidence of placenta accreta, a disorder in which the placenta implants too far into the uterus, ranged from 0,24 % in first-time c-section patients to 6,74 % in women who had six or more c-sections.

Incidence of placenta previa, in which placenta implanted far too close to the cervix, had higher rates, ranging from 3% in first-time c-section patients to 67 % in women who had five or more c-sections.
