Hello! My son has been diagnosed Attention Deficit Disorder. He used to have problems with keeping attention on play activities when he was in the kindergarten but we didn’t pay much attention. We though he was just active and impulsive child. He started with his school this year and his teacher noticed he didn’t take care for details and he made careless mistakes in his schoolwork. He was easily distracted and he avoided doing his homework. We are visiting our psychotherapist regularly and we hope to improve his condition. Since my son has bad sleeping patterns would this affect his ADD?

Hello! Bad sleeping patterns affect your son’s general health condition. It is very important to have quality sleep, especially for him. Inadequate sleep will make him even more moody, impulsive and less able to concentrate. It is well known that sleep deprivation also makes learning more difficult. Also, you should know that some researches showed that some children were mislabeled with ADD, and the real problem was chronic sleep deprivation. Maybe you should check his diagnose again. Causes of ADD are most probably a different brain activity and structure and genetic predisposition. Other causes such as conditions of pregnancy and birth, toxins or television viewing are still under investigation.
