A new study was conducted among 42 healthy married couples to explore the effects of marital stress on health. More specifically, the study was focused on assessing the production of proinflammatory proteins and their role in wound healing.

Marriages that are stressful and where spouses argue often interfere with both physical and mental health by changing the blood pressure and endocrine levels. The new study showed that a stressful relationship could actually delay the wound healing process.
The couples who participated in the study underwent a structured social support interaction, and a discussion of their marital disagreement. Their behaviour and responses were rated during the meetings.

Analysis showed that couples who had marital conflicts had a slower healing process. The rate of healing was 60% lower compared to their counterparts. A change in cytokines levels was also noted. A long-term cytokine level fluctuation could have devastating effects on the individual’s health. There could be a risk for developing a variety of age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and certain cancers.

People who have troubled relationships should ask for help in order to respond appropriately to improve their mental and physical health.
