Hi, I have been using Xanax for five months for treatment of my depression after hurricane. I believe I am addicted to Xanax. Now, my doc is introducing Zoloft for me too. Should I stop taking Xanax?

Hi, I'm taking 150mg Zoloft, and before this I have been using Xanax and occasionally combination of both. I've been increasing dose of Xanax from 0.25 to finally 1.5 to 2 mgs a day on average for a few months, and pushed myself not to go further. I have been experiencing panic attacks, but now they are down to a minimum. You should know that it is very difficult to stop Xanax, and you need to be guided by doctor to decrease the amount you intake gradually, otherwise you will have sever withdrawal effects. Zoloft is also useful drug, and I find it very useful.

I have suffered with anxiety problems my whole life. It appears that the trend is to put everyone with anxiety disorder and deppression on an SSRI such as Zoloft. I hate these medications. Everytime I have taken them i have gained at least ten pounds that does not come off. Xanax has been a wonder drug for me it helps with anxiety and helps with deppression. Some psychiatrist freak out over using Xanax instead of Klonipin and they automatically put you on an SSRI. The SSRI's are addictive as well. You cannot stop takiing them immediately or else you fall into serotonin. Withdrawl the only antideppressant that I found that works is Wellbutrin If you need something to help you get up in the morning and go about your day.

Definitely, Xanax is a drug which must be tapered slowly in order to discontinue its use. If I remember correctly, the suggested rate is something like .25mg every 3-4 days. So, if you were on .5mg/day, you would drop to .25mg, stay on that for 3-4 days then stop altogether. But, looking at the date of this post, you probably quit some time ago and it doesn't matter anymore!
