Yo-yo dieting has been found by the Swedish and American researchers to double the risks of developing kidney cancers.

The weight cycling, repeated loss and gain of body weight due to excessive dieting, was never considered good and healthy because it wouldn’t allow the body to settle.

Over 140,000 women aged between 50 and 79 had been studied for eight years to evaluate the consequences of yo-yo dieting. The study results showed that
weight cycling as well as a large waistline pose higher risk in the development of the kidney cancer in older women than obesity alone.

Women with larger waist to hip ratios were at 80% increased risk of developing renal cell carcinoma (RCC ), a type of kidney cancer. Many reasons have been suggested as the possible link between yo yo dieting and RCC. Previous studies showed that weight cycling was linked to hypertension, which is a risk factor for RCC. Also, frequent weight fluctuations may lead to kidney damage by stirring up metabolic or functional changes and increase cancer susceptibility.

Researchers advised women that it was safer to gradually put on weight with growing age instead of shedding weight through strict dieting.
