It has been known that drinking yogurt that contains bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus on regular basis helps in the prevention and treatment of yeast infections.

A new research shows that this 'friendly bacteria' has been genetically modified to produce a drug that blocks HIV infection. The tests are still preliminary and the bacteria has been tested in a lab dish only but the scientists are more than optimistic about this approach.

The bacterium naturally produces lactic acid and it is found in some parts of the human body, like the gut and the vagina, where the acid it produces decreases the growth of harmful bacteria.

HIV specialist have worked on altering the genetic make-up of this bacterium so that it could generate cyanovirin, a drug that has prevented HIV infection in monkeys and human cells.

However, more research is needed until receiving the final results.
