Could you let your children cry without checking up on them?

Recent studies have determined that sleep disorders in children could be causing behavioral and learning problems later on.

Reviewing over 52 sleep studies, researchers found that "sleep training" was effective in helping kids fall asleep and stay asleep. There are many behavioral tactics to help children sleep and they are found to be effective in 80% of the kids who underwent sleep training.

There are different approaches, "self-soothing" themselves back to sleep and quiet bedtime practices being some of them.

However, the most effective method was found to be the so called "extinction" method. Although it may seem insensitive and cruel, it gave the best results. In the severest form of this method, parents should put the children to bed at the same time every night and pay no attention to their crying and calling. There is also a modified form of the "extinction" method in which the parents let their child's crying go on for increasingly longer stretches before checking in on them but without making any exceptions like playing, reading or putting on the lights.

Proper sleep in children is very important. Sleep disorders affect the children’s’ daily activities, affect their mood making them irritable or inattentive and could in this way affect the whole family. If one sleeping training doesn’t work for your child, you can always try another one and find the one that suits your child.

Young parents are being advised lately to prevent sleeping disorders by instilling healthy sleep habits right from the start. This way there won’t be any problems to be fixed and the children as well as the parents will benefit from such healthy behaviour.
