When I was 9 my sternum did the same thing. I obviously do not know how yours moved; but mine turned in on the left side and out on the ride side. It has gotten much visably worse as I have gotten older (i'm not 23) and it has become very painful at times. When i was 15 a surgeon told me that the cartiladge on the right side did not develop correctly so my ribs forced it to pop out. I don't know what the medical terminology is for it as they told me the only thing they could do was to perform surgery, and that was not something i wanted to do at 15. The doctors assured me that it was harmless; although can be painful.

Lately though, I have been having shortness of breath with the pain.

I have no idea how your sternum turned but if it sounds anything like this... I'm sure its nothing to worry about; but you could ask your doctor about the cartildge. Good luck!
