During ovulation our body is getting ready for pregnancy by forming a lining tissue in the uterus. When pregnancy doesn’t occur, this tissue is shed and this is called menstruation.
In a condition called endometriosis, this tissue grows outside the uterus and attaches to other organs like the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
It causes painful menstrual periods, abnormal menstrual bleeding and pain during or after sexual intercourse.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for this condition, only treatment and it may lead to infertility.

I have to say that you were lucky with the symptoms as well. I had unbearable pains during my periods, which were irregular by the way and I couldn’t have sex because it hurt so much. I talked to a gynecologist and she told me she had no experience with painful intercourses, so she referred me to a specialist who deals with pains during sex. She didn’t even run any tests. This doctor diagnosed me with endometriosis. I also had some internal bleeding but as far as I know, women can become infertile or develop scar tissue formations, adhesions, and bowel problems. I am not sure but I think the cause is not known.

Well, as far as I know this has not been proved. I am 42 and I have intercourse during the menstrual cycle and nothing ever happened to me. It has been suggested that intercourse during menses might increase tubal activity and increase the backflow of the menstrual cycle through the tubes and thus increase the risk of endometriosis, but I repeat this is theory. I’ve never heard that actually happened.
