Hi! Are there some alternatives to lactulose? My husband has cirrhosis. His condition is very serious. But he has also a problem with PSE. His doctor prescribed him lactulose. When they give him lactulose he complained of nausea. Are there some alternatives to lactulose?
Hi! The first step in therapy is to treat the primary disease – cirrhosis of the liver. Lactitol (beta-galactosido-sorbitol), a novel disaccharide analogue of lactulose, has been suggested as an alternative to lactulose in the treatment of portosystemic encephalopathy (PSE). No patient who received lactitol experienced any side effects. Lactitol is another good alternative in the treatment of PSE.
