I've been taking 100mg for such a long time that I don't know if I ever took 25mg. I think I began with a dose of 50mg per night. I had to go up as high as 150mg per night because every time I increased my effexor dose I had to increase the trazadone.

If it's not helping you sleep after a few weeks I would increase the dose. The only thing is you need to go to be earlier so you don't end up with that hangover effect.

Good luck.

For anyone who is taking (or took) trazodone, how long did it take before working on the anxiety/depression. I am getting brutal sore throats, red eyes, etc and wanted to know if these side effects ever go away or when it will start working. I am taking 100 mg for 12 days now. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

For the love of God stop taking the medicine if it is not working. Psychiatric drugs are liver damaging and dangerous drugs to be playing around with.

I've been using trazadone for insomnia for 3 years, after not sleeping through the night for 6.......I tried everything, but after having children, my brain chemistry seemed altered........could not sleep and would wake up all night. Didn't seem anxious or depressed, just couldn't sleep. It wrecked havoc on my life and finally after resorting to drug treatments that didn't work........a nurse told me about trazadone. My doc prescribed it and I've slept for 3 years. I take 25mg but many physicians start at 75 or 50 for sleep. 25 is a pretty low dose...

I took this for a few weeks a couple of years ago and it did help me sleep, also lowered my heart rate and I gained a couple of pounds. However it also threw my liver enzymes out of whack so it was discontinued. Probably a good idea to get this checked if you are a regular user.

I've been taking trazedone for about a month and it started helping me sleep better the first night I took it.already I don't feel like its the end of the world every time my kid yells at me and if I have to get up in the middle of the night with my baby I can and I'm not stoned like every other sleep medicine I've tried...even if I only get 3 hours it is more solid and I feel better BUT I would be very careful about using it if I was not chemically depressed..The good news is its completely non addictive and has very few side effects..BUT taking antideppresant when your not depressed can do things to you like make you dpressed or give you high anxiety so careful OK

Everyone's info has been so helpful that i wanted to share my experience as well. I was first prescribed Trazodone in Nov 07, as a sleep aid for my insomnia. My doctor told me to take 75mg,, but surprising i slept even worse. I actully never fell asleep because my nose got sooo stuffy i could hardly breath, and i felt more alert. So i decided not to take it again. Then about a month ago, a friend mentioned he was taking it to sleep, and that it worked great,,, so i thought i should give it another try. This time i took about half of that,,,37mg. Now it works! Some nights it seems like 25mg works even better,,,, but lately i've been switching between the doses,,since it doesnt always work great. I seem to fall asleep for 3 or 4 hours,,, then i can fall back asleep. I guess i should increase the dose,,,just hesitant i suppose.
I slept great all of my 27 years,, but since a bad breakup over a year ago now,,,i havnt slept. I really hope i can go back to normal one day,,,, but i'm glad i have trazodone in the mean time Smile

I asked my doctor for something to sleep and he gave me trazodone, if i could go back i would have never asked him for anything. I too decided to try to stop taking it cold turkey and it messed me up. I was never aware that trazodone was an anti depressant as well, and when I stopped taking it it threw me into this wierd depresion. I had never had problems with depresion before. It took me a while to get everything straitened out. This pill is a bad idea to take just for sleep, its purpose is a sedative for severely depressed people and it should only be used for that.
