Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which the internal structure of a joint is examined for diagnosis and treatment. In this procedure a arthroscope is used. It is a smalltube that contains optical fibers and lenses. Patients can usually return home after the procedure. During arthroscopy the arthroscope is inserted through tiny incisions in the skin into the joint. It is connected to a video camera and the interior of the joint is seen on a monitor. The size of the arthroscope varies with the size of the jointbeing examined. Typically, the knee is examined with an arthroscope thatis five millimeters in diameter. If a procedure, which may follow examination, is done arthroscopically instead of by traditional surgical techniques, it causes less tissue trauma, results in less pain, and may promote a quicker recovery allowing the patient to go home after the procedure. Arthroscopy can be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of manynoninflammatory, inflammatory, and infectious types of arthritis as well as various injuries within the joint.
Arthrocentesis is a joint aspiration, a procedure where a sterile needle and syringe are used to drain fluid from a joint. For an arthrocentesis, the skin over the joint is sterilized with a liquid. Local anesthetic is applied to the area of the joint either by injection or topical liquid freezing, or both. A needle with a syringe attached is inserted within the joint and fluid is sucked back. The needle is then removed and a bandaid is applied over the entry point. Arthrocentesis can be used for relieving swelling and pain of a joint. Occasionally, medications like cortisone are injected into the joint during the arthrocentesis in order to rapidly relieve joint inflammation and further reduce symptoms.
