My father has been diagnosed with megaloblastic anemia. It is quite possible that he has been attacked by this illness, because of his alcoholism. I cannot say that he was a bad father because of that, but he is ill now and I am trying to help him. Doctor mentioned atrophic gastritis as a possible cause of his entire problem. What is that?
That is a process of inflammation of the mucosa layer in the stomach. This leads to loosing of gastric glandular cells. The consequence of this is lower level of substances such as pepsin, HCl, intrinsic factor etc. This all leads to B12 deficiency which causes megaloblastic anemia. That is the connection.
