My cousin was diagnosed multiple sclerosis in first stadium. Doctor put her on baclofen to relieve muscle rigidity that started to affect her. Is it just symptomatic therapy? Can it stop or slow progression of the disease? How exactly does it work in muscles?

The way that baclofen works is not completely known. It is antispastic agent and is indicated in multiple sclerosis. Baclofen is agonist of gamma amino butyric acid that is transmitter in nervous system and it helps restore imbalance in muscle activity. Therapy with baclofen is symptomatic; it does not cure the disease. Baclofen helps the patient that way that allows more normal movements and that way makes the life quality better.
