Hello! I heard that there are some bacteria that enter our bodies through digestive tract and from there they go on causing different illnesses, diseases or even deaths. How come that they manage to survive and are not being killed by the stomach acid?

One of the bacteria that actually enjoys acid environment is Helicobacter
Pylori. This bacteria lives in the stomach in its own hole. Many other bacteria don’t enjoy stomach acid. The thing is that acidity of the stomach is not constant. A full stomach, after a big meal,
finished with a huge glass of milk may be hardly
acidic, and is nothing compared to an empty, hungry
stomach, ready for food.
When bacteria enter the stomach, some amount is killed by the stomach and some stays. Those bacteria that cause the gastrointestinal diseases are most likely to surviving the stomach. These are Salmonella, E.coli, Shigella, Campylobacter,
Listeria, Bacillus species, Vibrio cholerae.
There are also good bacteria that live in the intestine. The bacterial content of our intestines is not static, bacteria come and go.
