If you have breathing problems or problems with high blood pressure, you should talk to your doctor or a trainer in a gym ( if they are qualified ), so that you can choose proper exercise for you. When you bench press, you have to hold breath in order to get tighter and lift more weight. By holding your breath you will increase your blood pressure, which is why you need to be careful.

| That is flat out wrong. You do NOT hold your breath while benching. Proper form includes breathing in while lowering the weight and breathing out while you push it back up. There is no reason why bench pressing would be hard on your heart as long as you are good enough health to be in the gym lifting weights in the first place. |

Wow, how vindictive. The proper form for a bench press IS to breathe while you're performing the exercise, but there is a moment when you need to hold your breath on the bridge between the concentric and eccentric contractions... You can ask any body builder NOT juicin' and they'll tell you the exact same thing.
If the pain while holding your breath is right in the middle of your sternum, your heart is being pressurized against your rib cage. The cause of this could be anything including but not limited to: asthma, smoking, bronchitis, high blood pressure (and high cholesterol), and possibly a cracked sternum.
My advice? Don't bounce the bar off your chest, you're cheating yourself in addition to harming your heart. And use a little less weight to start out, work your way up so that your heart can get use to it. |
