My son has been diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. He has used Ritalin and is now on Concerta. There were some positive changes with these drugs but a friend suggested we tried biofeedback and maybe even get rid of the drugs one day. Can you tell me more about this biofeedback and its effects on the brain? Thank you

EEG Biofeedback is used in situations in which the brain is not working as well as it might. One of such disorders is ADHD and conduct, concentration and learning problems associated with the disorder. Biofeedback works by placing sensors on the scalp and earlobe and the child starts playing a game. The brain's electric signals move through the gold cups into wires and into a computer that further changes the electrical impulses from the child's scalp into moving pictures. The child uses his mind to control the play of the game. When the child is concentrated, he scores more points in the game but when he is daydreaming the game slows down. This way, the child learns how to strengthen and use the positive brain signals and diminish the negative ones. You may wonder how many of such sessions is necessary to see any benefits. It all depends on a child and severity of their problem. You may notices changes within three weeks but it could take 40 to 60 and even more sessions to totally eliminate the disorders.
