birth control after abortion

i just had an abortion on thursday. the friday after, i noticed that i had stopped bleeding and talked to my doctor and he said that i could start birth control. i started that friday but noticed that i started bleeding again on saturday. today is wednesday and im still bleeding but it is very light. i continued to take the birth control during the bleeding. is that a bad idea?
