Has your son been taking pepto bismol or anything like it? A chemical in it does dye your stool black. My GI doctor told me.
If he hasn't, then black stool signifies upper abdominal bleeding. It could be anything from an ulcer to IBS to something more serious. I suggest you see a gastrointestinal doctor as soon as possible. Good luck.
