bleeding during sex! HELPPPPP!!!!

i recently had sex the other day with my boyfriend and things got pretty intense, he made a quick gesture and i felt a sharp pain in my vagina and he noticed that i began bleeding. Right away we were both frighten. I bled for a a minute or two with NO pain. I've been on birth control pills for almost a year now and do not understand why this bleeding occur. Could it be that my boyrfriend penetrated me too hard or could it be something more serious?
