I was talking to some of my friends about their first time and I was so shocked when one of them told me that she had deliberately broken her hymen with her fingers. Can you tell me more about hymen?

You have nothing to be surprised about because this is actually very common among young girls. Some of them do this deliberately and others while masturbating. The hymen is a layer of tissue, just like the tissue around the opening of your vagina that partially conceals the vaginal orifice and most females have it. However, there have been cases of absence of hymen at birth. Many girls and teens tear or dilate their hymen while participating in sports like bicycling, horseback riding, gymnastics, inserting tampons or while masturbating. A girl may not even know this has occurred. This is due to a fact that there may be little or no blood or pain involved. Some girls have hymens that elastic enough to permit a penis to enter without tearing. Other case is that they tear only partially, and there is no bleeding at all. What exactly are you trying to get rid of? Hymen? Why would you wanna do that by a doctor?
Hymen is something that is usually lost during first sexual experience, but some girls break their hymens during masturbation or fingering and others less fortunate lose their hymens by inserting a tampon.
However, there have been some reports that girls lost their hymens by hitting their genitals on the bicycle seat or during excessive exercises.
The thing is that hymen is pretty precious to some girls as it indicates their virginity. It is not a case for a surgical removal.
Are you male or female?

| i lost my virginity by my boyfriend's finger and i was bleeding for 24 hrs. I heard that its possible for girls to bleed for 2 or 3 times the next time of actual intercourse. Is that true? |

Like there are different women, there are also different vaginas, labia, and hymens.
Hymen is a thin layer of tissue that covers the vaginal opening. During early stages of fetal development, there is no hymen, there is no vaginal opening at all. It shows up prior to birth by dividing the thin layer of tissue that conceals the vagina.
Hymen can be different shapes and some girls may be born without a hymen as the layer has completely divided prior birth. However, there are girls who are born without an opening, so doctors need to make a whole in order to let the menstrual blood out.
Some hymens are elastic and may allow many penises in without being broken while there are thick ones that make it impossible for the penis to enter.
The girls who have elastic hymens may not bleed or experience that “first-intercourse-pain” everybody’s talking about. Those less unfortunate girls who have thick hymens may bleed a couple of times until the hymen ruptures all the way.
So, to answer your question, yes, it is possible for a girl to bleed a couple of first times. |

I'm not sure what the motive of the other person asking about surgery to remove the hymen was, but mine is pretty just. I have an abnormal tight one, used to not be able to put in the thinnest tampon or even the tip of my pinky but had to be "stretched out" (you can imagine how enjoyable that was..). I can use tampons and have tried to stretch myself out more but if feels impossible and I cannot fathom how I will ever be able to put a penis in there! I know for a fact that there is a surgery to remove hymens for girls who just have extremely tight and difficult ones so this post is to explain why anyone would want to remove it and I'm wondering if anyone knows about cost or how long it takes/how serious of a procedure it is. Thanks  ) |

| I wouldn't worry about getting it surgically removed if I were you. You may think it's too tight to ever get a penis in it, but I guaruntee you that on your first time your lover will be more than willing, and able to push his penis through your hymen. There is no need to pay or go through the trouble of getting surgery. |
