brown spotting after period

I have been on seasonale which makes it so I only have my period 4 times a year and when it came around time for me to have my period I was late...It just never came. I never took a pregnancy test because I've never seemed to be able to get into a steady cycle. I got my period 3 weeks later and it was really heavy and lasted for 5 days. A day later I began spotting and I'm still spotting 5 days later but now it's brown and it has started to develop a smell. I've been sick during this time too with a stomach bug could that be the cause? Any advice would be great.
