brownish discharge before period on pill

I am 23 years old, I had a baby 11 months ago and ever scince I have had all kinds of discharge. Recently I have had brownish discharge a couple of days before my period is due, I am on the contraceptive pill and have been with the same partener for 3 years so it's not a std also I have taken a pregnancy test and it was negative. Could this be normal? Is it just old blood? any suggestions? Smile
