I have several bruises on my lower legs that have been there for over 2 years. They do not hurt nor do they look like spider veins. There are unsightly and I feel self-conscious about showing my legs. I am 54, 5'3 and 128lbs. so I'm not overweight and I walk everyday. I went to a vein specialist that says they are broken blood vessels requiring shots and wearing tight support stockings for weeks. I don't believe this is the correct diagnosis. Any suggestions of what else it could be?

Excessive amount of the neurotransmitter dopamine. If you are taking a dopaminergenic drug that triggers the release of dopamine, and/or inhibits its reuptake, then, if prescribed, you should cut the dosage under the direction of your physician.

The bruises should disappear promptly, within a few days at most, when excess dopamine production is reduced.

I am aware that this is a late reply and the original poster will unlikely read it, however I thought it may benefit anybody else who has this issue and allocates this question.

I should also add that excess amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) may also cause this problem, but to a lesser extent than dopamine, however the same course of action should be taken.

This may occur with SSRI's/SNRI's/NDRI's, while excess dopamine most frequently occurs with dopamine agonists or amphetamines.

It is ridiculous that a specialist may suggest injections, many physicians, with exception to psychiatrists, are unaware that unusual bruising or "blotches" on the lower legs are caused by an excess of the neurotransmitters mentioned.
