can our 5 week old be in the same room as his 2 1/2 year old cousins?

Our Dr. told us to keep our baby away from my 2 1/2 year old nieces until he's 12 weeks old. The girls are not sick and they do not attend any kind of day care. Could they be in the same room if they don't touch him or if they wash hands first? Also all adults could wash hands before touching the baby. It would be nice for the family to be able to spend time together. Especially for grandma.
