i have my tonsils and i am clearing my throat every two seconds as i write, i think mine is a neurological problem, i think my epiglottis is flaccid and everything that's draining down my throat is not directed away from my airway. thoughts?

[quote="Guest"] My son, who is 5, had his tonsils out a few months ago. Prior to having his tonsils out, he had a lot of throat clearing, especially during eating. It stopped when he had his tonsils out. But now, it has come back. I don't know if it's related to seasonal allergies, which he has.

I have had the throat clearing problem also. Have tried the Nexium treatment, no help. I am wondering if this problem is not exaggerated by the use of Diovan which I am taking for my blood pressure. I tried the other ACE inhibitors and had even worse "coughing" problems. I stopped taking Diovan for awhile and did seem to get relief but Doctor put me back on it and ever since I have had this feeling that there is something in my throat that needs to come up but just can't raise it. One thing that I have found helpful is breathing steam vapors which usually allows me to bring up some mucus and ease the coughing and throat clearing for awhile.

if you have something in your throat and cannot get it out, i would recommend going to see a doctor about the problem. If you are imbarrassed about that issue, you can try caughing to see if that helps at all.

I have been clearing my throat cosntantly on and off for 17 years now along with intermittent chest pain. Gerd was discussed, treated, stress was discussed, treated, no dice! Its like there is no physician capable of giving me a solution.
Nasal sprays, nasal irrigation, etc, problem persists. I guess if it was a serious ilness it would have killed me by now! But God I hate this! Anybody heard of a solution?

I have the same problem. I've had this problem for over 20 years. One thing that greatly helps is avoiding sugar, chocolate, and fat. Sugar seems to be the worst of the three. I try to eat products that are sugar free or low in sugar. This has greatly reduced the amount of clearing throat

I also have alot of drainage in my throat, my nose runs all the time. I take atrovent 10-12 sprays in each nostril every morning and a couple at
noon if it starts running again. It really helps but the drainage in my throat and always having to clear my throat is something else. If I get a little coughing spell which is every day, usually last just a couple minutes,
then I will be clearing my throat for at least 1/2 hr to an hour. Drives me nuts. Alot of foods make me have to clear my throat. I've been to an alergist, can't give me any answers. Went to an ENT doctor,he told me to go see a hypnotist. I never did. I had my tonsils out when I was little so its nothing to do with tonsils. My mom and her mother had this to.
I've tried gargling with warm salt water, doesn't do anything. Its so annoying to have to be clearing your throat all the time. Sometimes when I don't have to clear my throat its so nice.

I have gone through many of the same issues that many of you are expressing. It has been 8 years. I have been to 3 ENTs, a gasto physician, family doctor several times all to no avail.
It never goes away and impacts every area of my life. I feel like glue keeps formulating in my throat. Espeically bad in the morning, after eating or playing sports.
I have even tried 2 naturopaths.......

I would be eternally grateful for any solution.

Good luck to all......

I can totally relate to the above comments. I would do almost anything to find a solution.
I have had this for about 8 years. I am constantly having to clear my throat. It is especially bad in the mornings, after eating, playing sports or anytime I have to talk a lot.
I seen numerous medical doctors and naturopaths. 3 ENTs, a gasto physician etc......all to no avail.

Any help you could provide....I would be incredibly grateful. Thanks.

I can relate completely to all of the comments posted here. I have had a cough/clearing of the throat for about 12 years now. I have tried all of the inhalers, medication and surgeries that might of cured this symptom, but none have worked. I had my tonsils out, didn't help. I had a EGD done and they put a 48 hour pH monitor in me that told me that I had acid reflux and had surgery, a lapascopic nissin, to help fix the acid that was coming back up, but that didn't work either. I have tried taking Maalox and Mylanta for my acid reflux, but doesn't help at all. The only thing that has really helped is constantly eating or drinking all of the time to help subside the clearing of the throat sensation, but if I eat all of the time, I would weigh quite a bit. I have even went to the Cleveland Clinic and seen a doctor that specializes in chronic coughs and she still didn't have a reason why I do this and the way it sounds, no other doctor can provide a reason either. I would just wish to get rid of the constant headache and stomach pain from constantly coughing all of the time and actually be able to have a conversation or go to the movies and not cough constantly.
