One of the most common side effects of epidurals is drop in blood pressure. That happens because amount of substance gets into systemic circulation and expose its effect there. This is common used combination in epidurals-anaesthetic with morphine or petidine that is also opioid. Morphine affects muscles of bowel and urinary system, which leads to urine retention, delayed emptying of stomach and constipation. Morphine cause histamine release, and may cause respiratory depression that can be significant and dangerous. So, these side effects are common caused by morphine given by any other route beside epidural.
