| Hi, a friend of mine has the worst possible illness a woman can get. She is diagnosed with breast cancer. It freaked us all out. We do not even know anything about it. After some tests she underwent, and after diagnosis was made, the doctor scheduled an operation. As far as I understood it, the operation is called lumpectomy. I would like to know the possible complications of such a procedure. |

| Hi, lumpectomy is a procedure by which a part of the breast is removed. A reason for that is breast cancer. The operation is followed by radiation therapy and, in some cases, chemotherapy. There are some complications that can occur during lumpectomy due to a poor nutrition, smoking, recent or chronic illness, obesity, use of certain medications. There can also be some difficulties for performing lumpectomy if there are multiple masses that need to be removed, or if the mass is close to the nipple, very large, growing fast or if it is attached to a nearby structure. The complications that may follow lumpectomy are: hematoma-gathering of the blood in the wound, seroma-gathering of the clear fluid in the wound, infection, nipple may be numb as well as the underarm skin, lymphedema-swelling of the arm produced by lymph nodes in which the accumulating of fluid occurs, size or shape changing of the breast and inflammation of the veins medically called phlebitis. I hope that your friend will have a safe surgery and a quick recovery without any complications. |
