Hi, I am concerned about my son. He is only 12 years old, and he constantly lies. He is exaggerating and lying even when there is not a good reason for it. I know that all the children do that occasionally, but this is too much for me to accept. I have to help him somehow before it is too late. What can I do to stop him become a compulsive liar?

Hello. All the children lie more or less, but when the lying is compulsive, there is probably a reason for us to be concerned. A reason for this behavior could be the social behavior disorders, or even some traumatic experiences. I think you should take your son either to a psychiatrist or to a counselor. It’s better to deal with this problem now, than to wait until he’s a grown man. I had a friend who was constantly lying about everything. I remember as it was yesterday when she told me how her father was killed. When I mentioned that to her, she was almost mad at me for making something like that up. It was sad. She lied that much, that she forgot half the things she said. I think that compulsive liars don't think they are as good as the other people, so they have to make things up.
