constant back pain

my boyfriend who is only 21 used to have to lift really heavy objects for his old job. it really messed up his back, and ever since then is back has always bothered him. he can never get comfortable because its always hurting. he usually cant stand for long period of time becuase it will start hurting really bad.
does anyone have any suggestions of what could help?
we dont have the money to go to the doctor and what not or else that would of all ready been done.

any suggestoins would be appreciated.
