| Im not sure but that is also a symptom of a partial seizure if im correct, they would start smelling things, so it probably has to do somethin with the brain signals? not too sure |

Posted: 05/19/07 - 20:42 Post subject: i've also smelled amonia for 1 year |
|
|
Hello everyone! I usually want to post on these types of groups but find that you have to register and pay first on the others, so YAY for this group
So a year ago I started smelling amonia like deep in my nose out of nowhere, first about once a day and now maybe once a week. Some people are posting that we could smell LIKE amonia; but for me and I'm sure most others, we mean that we smell it in our heads not on our bodies.
I have had a CT scan & MRI to rule out brain tumor, stroke, etc.; an EKG to rule out epilepsy; and tonnes of blood and urine tests to rule out a bunch of stuff, especially kidney-related I think. Since they haven't found anything, I now take anti-anxiety pills (Effexor) which actually have helped things, but I'm not so sure that these smells are caused by anxiety. In addition, I've got a psychiatrist who is trying to figure out if this is mental rather than physical. FUN, huh!?
So you guys out there, just make sure you demand that you get the MRI, EKG, and blood and urine tests to rule out the scarier things, and please be comforted by the fact that I've had this for a year and it is getting better and I'm not dead yet - knocking on wood
Be well everyone,
Jenna |

|
|
| I too have been dealing with this ammonia smell, otherwise known as cat pee smell. I have a cat and definitely thought it was him, but I am now finding the smell at work, and it worries. My co-workers can't smell it but my husband has definitely smelled it. We both thought is was our cat, but I am more inclined to think it's me. I am not working out like all the google searches claim and my health is good. This is so disturbing for me, as I never actually wanted a cat because of the litter box smell and now it goes with me everywhere, in and out during the day. I am going crazy trying to figure the smell out and it's origin. Has anyone found a solution? This is about to drive me mental. |

| Has anyone figured this out. I get a smell but it is more like talc or a medicine powder and it is after exertion sometimes. I can smell Tylenol after I take it so I figure it might just be my blood pressure meds I'm smelling here and there. It is only about 5 minutes or less and not everyday I get the smell |

| Did anyone get an answer for this?I get a smell maybe a few times a week and it is usually after activity or exertion. It is like a talc/powder/medicine smell. I can smell Tylenol when I take it so I figured maybe it was my blood pressure meds or something that I can smell. |

last fall i was told that my kidneys are working at 50%.
two or three times since then i have noticed an ammonia smell in my nose
or mouth. in all cases i had over exherted myself outside doing lawn work and had become dehydrated. the sysmptons last about a week before becoming unnoticeable. i suspect i am dying a slow kidney related death.... |

That is horrible to say. I hope that isn't the case and you can find a way to get better. I don't ever have the feeling in my mouth, just a slight smell that lasts a few minutes. |

Hi! I found your site looking for an answer to my ordeal last night. I was sleeping very nicely when I awoke because the smell of ammonia kept me from inhaling, especially through my mouth...Coughing horribly, I got up and had a glass of water which stopped the smell, but upon awakening about 5 hours later, I had severe pain in my chest and left arm. I took an aspirin and the pains went away after about an hour.
After reading the other posts here, I wondered about the curiously strong and nasty smelling "first" pee of the morning and the fact that I ate a whole lot of asparagus for dinner the night before.
Any experts out there to speculate on this? I am very curious and hope I don't have kidney failure, brain tumors, or tissue rot....hopefully it is related to all the asparagus. Wish me luck! |

| Many people get freaked out by this and assume thw worst. I only get my smell here and there and I wouldn't exactly call it a strong ammonia smell. I have read many times that anxiety and stress can also make the smell. Don't assume the worst. |

| The smell that mamy of you are experiencing comes from a sinus infection. Certain bacteria are known as ammonia splitters. Basically the ammonia is their waste. Ask your doctor for a prescription for Cipro. It is a good antibiotic for ammonia splitters. |
