I have a friend who always yawns at classes. Could this be due to a disorder? Sometimes is really annoying and the teachers keep asking him if he is bored at classes but he says he can’t control it. Is there a disease that can cause yawning?

Yawning is caused by decreased oxygen levels in the blood, and is generally associated with sleepiness or boredom. There are a couple of theories about yawning. Some people say it is low oxygen factor, others argue that it is a way of regulating activity or arousal levels, or a protective reflex which maintains proper lung inflation and prevents collapsed alveoli. Excessive yawning may be associated with are disorders of the central nervous system like epilepsy, encephalitis, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and progressive supranuclear palsy.
