cramps and pregnacy

Is is possible to have period like bleeding and cramps around the time when your supposed to have a period if you are pregnant. Ive experienced this and I'm wondering if it is just my period or the bleeding sometimes seen in early pregnacy; even though I had pretty bad cramps and a heavy flow.
