My mom is in menopause and she is going to major hormonal changes. I am worried because of the not only estrogen and progesterone level have changed, she also has decreased testosterone level. She was prescribed on hormone therapy. Is this normal appearance for the women in menopause?
You can go too far with sex stereotyping of hormones. Women make testosterone too, although in much smaller amounts. The FDA has approved Estratest, a combination estrogen-testosterone pill, for women suffering from menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and the testosterone dose is so small that the risk of liver toxicity is minor. Even stranger thing is that I found out that some of a man's testosterone gets converted by the liver and fat tissue into estrogen.
