diabetes and kidney problems

I cannot even imagine what kind of hard life awaits my daughter. She is seven years old and she has just been diagnosed with diabetes type 1. She has to receive insulin every day, since her body is not capable of producing it. When I asked the doctors is there something else we should look for, they said that there could be a connection between diabetes and kidney problems that may occur. Is that true? Just another misfortune for her…

Well, we should not jump to conclusion immediately. Diabetes type one, or juvenile diabetes affects 5 to 10 percent of all diabetes patients. As for diabetes and kidney problems, it would take years for kidney to start function abnormally, if that happens at all. Small amounts of albumin in urine are the very first symptom of kidney problems (microalbuminia). Later, this condition worsens until kidney stops working. But, if she does not show any signs after 25 years of living with diabetes, possibility of kidney trouble decreases.
