My father had diarrhea accompanied by cramping abdominal pain. I would not be so much worried about this, if that was first time he complains about it. Once before he told me about diarrhea so I do not know what to think. I started to wonder if that could be sign of something serious, and he needs to visit his doctor. Can you tell me more about diarrhea, causes and treatment?

Diarrhea is loose, watery stools, when occurring more than three times in one day. Diarrhea is a common problem that usually lasts a day or two and goes away on its own without any special treatment. However, prolonged diarrhea can be a sign of other problems, but you have not mention how your father’s diarrhea lasts. Problem is what diarrhea can cause dehydration, which means the body lacks enough fluid to function properly. This problem can be caused by infection, or intestinal disease. Off course, there are some other causes of diarrhea, such as bacterial infections, viral infections, or food intolerances. I do not know anything more about your father’s symptoms, so I will tell you when doctor should be consulted. Diarrhea can become dangerous or signal for some serious problem if he has this symptom for more then 3 days. If he has noticed severe pain in abdomen or rectum, fever, or blood in stool, he should check it with the doctor.
