diazepam while taking prednisone

my teenage son is in inpatient rehab - he is currently on 30 mg predisone a day. rehab wants to put him on diazepam for alcohol withdrawal, is it safe?

Interactions of prednisone and diazepam are not evidenced. Diazepam is used to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It is long acting drug and is effective in reducing these symptoms. There are indications for using diazepam even in children at the age of 6 months, so it can not harm your teenage son. Doses of diazepam that are recommended for adults in treatment of alcohol withdrawal are about 30-40mg daily, divided in 3-4 doses. They are gradually decreasing, because diazepam may be habit forming in long term use. After the therapy with prednisone, take care about boosting your son’s immunity. Prednisone and alcohol are more dangerous for kids than diazepam is.
